Guidelines for Lectors |
Before Mass place the closed lectionary on the ambo. The red notebook with the prayers of the faithful is placed at the ambo or, if a Deacon is present, at his place. The Book of the Gospels is processed in either by the first lector or the deacon. The Book is placed in the front middle of the altar. You do not reverence the altar when carrying the Book of the Gospels. Move to the altar as the priest and altar servers move. At the appropriate time the lector for the first reading will approach the sanctuary, reverence the altar, go to the ambo and proclaim the first reading. Reverence the altar on the way back to your seat. When the cantor is seated after singing the Psalm Response, the lector proclaiming the second reading approaches the altar and proclaims the reading. After placing the lectionary in the side plastic holder the reader reverences the altar and is seated. If there is no deacon present the lector proclaiming the second reading is to lead the prayers of the faithful. The lectors do not process out.
SOME REMINDERS: When coming up to read please go to the center to bow. You are bowing to the altar, not the tabernacle. Please get a replacement if you cannot read on a particular day. Don't just assume the other lector will do both readings. I try to make out the schedule a week before the new month starts. Just let me know if you cannot serve on a particular day or weekend. You can leave a phone message, a not in the sacristy or e-mail me. Please be at the ambo when Father begins the Prayer of the Faithful.
