Troop 109 Fall 2003 Newsletter T. L. Storer Scout Camp: Summer Camp - Troop 109 had a super week at the T.L. Storer Scout Camp in early July. Scouts participated in a wide variety of activities and earned 33 merit badges. The weather cooperated with mild temperatures and relatively little rain. We participated in troop activities starting with a trip to the archery range and eliminator. Activities at COPE, scoutcraft, nature and the rifle range followed. Free time was often spent at the waterfront or at the rifle or shot gun ranges. A highlight of the week was a climbing activity where scouts climbed a forty-foot wall, and then rappelled down. The week wound up with the traditional watermelon tussle and Thursday night cookout. During the morning periods scouts worked on a variety of merit badges including fishing, archery, rifle shooting, first aid, basketry, leatherwork and wood carving. A number of scouts took on the challenge of wilderness survival, and learned to build shelters, and then spend a night in them. A new feature was the Mountain Man program that attracted five scouts from the troop. Spending the day with a re-enactor, the scouts learned to shoot black powder rifles and shot guns, throw knives and tomahawks, and learned a great deal about the pioneering trappers and hunters who explored America. Under the leadership of patrol leaders Chris Erickson, Charles Perry and Pat Doherty, the troop earned first class campsite inspections every day, and the honor troop award at the end of the week. Troop 109 was one of two troops receiving a perfect score in the honor troop competition. Thanks to Bob Doherty and Kathie Hansen who spent the week as adult chaperones. In addition, Kathie documented the week and prepared a cd that was given to all the scouts. Beaver weekend- Senior patrol leaders Jeremy Frank and Philip Hansen represented the troop at the annual Beaver weekend at the Storer Scout Camp. This is a volunteer work weekend that helps get the camp ready for the summer. Plymouth trip- A group of scouts camped in Plymouth in March, and visited the beach and observed natural life in the tidal area, watched birds and seals. Thanks to Mark Hansen, Matt Frank, Bob Bourque, Tom Finnegan and Dick Frank for their help on this trip. Skyline Trail Hike Scouts completed the 10 mile Skyline Trail hike in May followed by a cookout. Chris Burge, Chris Williams, James Perry, Ryan Finnegan, Charles Perry and Philip Hansen completed the trek. Troop 109 Eagles: Eagle scout Matt Frank spent part of the summer as an intern with Senator Kerry in Washington. Matt returned to Salem State to complete his studies. Eagle scout Mark Hansen returned to Boston University for his second year as a math major. Eagle scout Bob Bourque returned to Wentworth Institute of Technology . Eagle scout Jonathan Stewart returned for his second year at the University of Lowell. Matt, Mark and Bob serve as Assistant Scoutmasters. Storer Staff Members- Mark Hansen returned to the camp staff as Head Commissioner after being sent to National Camping School for certification. Philip Hansen and Jeremy Frank joined the camp staff as counselors serving in a variety of roles to help make the camp provide a quality program for hundreds of visiting scouts. Court of Honor- At the fall court of honor, Christian Lubanski and Matt French received their Second class scout badges after completing the requirements, having a scoutmaster conference and passing boards of review with flying colors. Congratulations. Chris Williams will receive the four merit badges he earned at camp, Tristan Rogers, Darien Rogers, James Perry, Jeremy Frank, Cesar Martin, Christian Lubanski and Matt French each were presented with three badges, Charles Perry, Chris Burge and David Kimemiah received two badges and Pat Doherty and Philip Hansen one badge. Chris Erickson received the COPE knot becoming only the second scout in troop history to successfully complete this challenging week- long program. Merit Badge Program- Many scouts have asked that we offer additional merit badges as part of the program. You can help us by signing up to be a merit badge counselor. Adult Volunteers are needed to help us deliver a quality program for your sons. We need help with transportation and chaperones. Please call if you would like to join the troop committee. Thanks to Tom Finnegan who recently became a member of the committee. Religious Emblem Program- All scouts who are in the eighth grade or older are encouraged to earn the religious award for their faith. The scoutmaster has a list of counselors for this program. Scouting for Food- In November, the Troop will begin collecting canned food for donation to the food pantry at Our Lady of Grace Church. Your support is greatly appreciated. Last year, over 20 bags of groceries were donated through this program.
